Nourishing the Irishman's Soul... Arcades, Irish Coffees to go..

The conversation unfolded as follows:

Me: "Let's play hooky from hooky today

Irishman: "Absolutely, any ideas in mind?"

Me: "How about heading to the Arcade and indulging in some fun, silly games and then seeing where the day takes us?"

Irishman: "Sounds like a plan! By the way, should we swing by the BV first?"

Me: "Absolutely!  Let's go!"

Both the Irishman and I share an unwavering affinity for the water. It is at the water's edge where we both find a sense of tranquility, peace, and comfort. We watch dogs frolic only like they can in the bay, swimmers doing lap after lap, tourists and locals alike taking a "paddle" and children playing fearlessly in the surf, with joyous abandon. It is here, in this magical space, that the soul of the Irishman's gets nourished . And when paired with a double Irish Coffee from the iconic Buena Vista, the experience becomes truly enchanting.

I was introduced to Irish Coffees To Go when the Irishman took me to the Buena Vista one afternoon.  Despite my years of patronage at this beloved San Francisco institution, "to-go Irish Coffee"  was a wonderful discovery. 

After our coffees, we headed towards the arcade games, as we walked, the Irishman declared his hunger. It dawned on us that we were nearing another cherished destination  In-N-Out Burger, a true Californian institution. 

For me, nothing beats my usual choice a double double protein style, The Irishman, on the other hand, prefers a  cheeseburger, topped with spread and onions only.  And of course, no visit to In-N-Out Burger is complete without indulging in their iconic fries.

With full bellies,  the Irishman and I embarked on our journey towards the arcade.  The Irishman often regales me with stories about his childhood days spent in arcades, particularly during the summer of 1976, I often notice a certain sparkle in his eyes, transporting him back to a time when he was eager to play pinball or a particular Ferrari race car game. I understood that an afternoon at the arcade would infuse his soul with joy and rejuvenation.

After enjoying several rounds of Pop Shot and Air Hockey at the first arcade, we made our way down the Wharf,  determined to find the Ferrari game in another arcade. Our excitement led us to the Musee Mecanique, an incredible working museum located at Pier 45 in San Francisco. Stepping inside, we were immediately captivated by the vast collection of both ancient and modern mechanical games, creating a truly enchanting atmosphere. The best part? Admission to the museum is absolutely free, and most games cost only fifty cents to play.

The elusive Ferrari game was not at the Musee, but there were many other amazing games for the Irishman to amuse himself with, including Space Invaders one of the very first games he had ever played.  It brought me great joy to watch the Irishman play games with great glee and enthusiasm.

As we headed home, in need of a pick me up, we felt the call of the water and enjoyed another Irish Coffee as the Golden Gate Bridge became wrapped in a beautiful foggy blanket. It was the perfect ending to an already perfect day.

Hours later at home, both the Irishman and I found ourselves succumbing to hunger pangs. Our stomachs growled in unison, urging us to satiate our hunger. Fortunately, luck was on our side, as I had just cooked mushroom and pea rice and amazing chicken. Sensing the opportunity to appease our famished bodies, I proposed the idea of a rice bowl to the Irishman, and he "kindly" said get on it!

I added several generous tablespoons of Chili Crunch, to the rice,  adding a spicy kick to the dish.  I sliced the chicken and added that as well, along with a sprinkle of Maldon salt. It was simply delicious.  

In that moment, we realized the power that food holds to not only fill our stomachs but also to comfort our souls. The day was a reminder of the simpler pleasures of life and the immense satisfaction that can be derived from a well-cooked meal shared with the ones you hold the most dear.
